By identifying high-risk individuals early on, before the onset of cancer, the PBCI Foundation can provide information about enrolling them in a comprehensive early detection program. This includes quarterly visits to the doctor and semi-annual clinical exams with mammography and ultrasound, MRI, colonoscopy or other diagnostic tests as indicated.

Through this early detection program, individuals can have aggressive treatment at the first appearance of cancer; improve the patient’s chances for a full recovery; and increase surveillance for the same type of cancer in the patient’s extended relatives.  The PBCI Foundation is one of the few institutions in Palm Beach County to provide cancer genetic screening and counseling services.

Genetic Counseling

PBCI Foundation’s cancer genetics screening program identifies people at a high risk for developing any of the hereditary cancer types (comprising 10-percent of all cancers) – including certain cancers of the breast, ovaries, pancreas, colon and melanoma.

PBCI Foundation’s risk-screening counselor
, Cathryn Kirvin, R.N., is a valued member of our cancer treatment team, providing information and support to patients and families who may be at risk for a variety of hereditary cancer types.
